[ARCHIVED] Council, Mayor Support Renewal of Property Tax Levy for Operations

2020.07.20 Press Release Renewal of Property Tax Levy -page-001 (1)

GRANDVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio – City Council approved legislation to place a renewal of the four year, 7.5 mill property tax levy on the November 3 ballot. At the special council meeting on July 20, City Council voted 6-0 (1 member absent) to approve Res. 14-2020 declaring the necessity for a renewal levy to provide for current General Fund expenses.

“This levy will ensure the continued tradition of investing in quality service delivery and infrastructure modernization throughout economic cycles,” said Council President Emily A. Keeler. “By passing this renewal, our voters are showing their continued support for the exceptional service residents have come to know and love.”

The property tax levy funds public safety and service operations in the City and has been supported and passed by voters since 1993.

Mayor Greta Kearns emphasized the need for stability. Says Kearns, “This levy is a continuation rather than a new tax and is a key component of our revenue structure, representing approximately 17% of general fund revenue — a stabilizing force as we enter uncertain economic times.”

Chris Smith, Chair of the Finance Committee, adds, “This levy represents a fiscally-sound renewal — as opposed to a tax increase — that is vital for investment in infrastructure and valued city services. The voters did the responsible thing in approving it overwhelmingly in 2016, and I am confident they will do so again this November.”
